Sports and MUSculoskeletal medicine
What is musculoskeletal medicine?
Musculoskeletal Medicine is the branch of medicine which addresses pain in the muscles, bones, ligaments and joints. It involves the non-surgical treatment of varied conditions like back pain, neck pain , (both acute and chronic), triggerpoints, sciatic-type pain, pain associated with arthritis, whiplash injuries, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, disc and nerve pain.
Orthopaedic Surgeons operate whereas Musculoskeletal Physicians use various non-invasive therapies, taking a Holistic approach to managing pain and dysfunction.
Therapies used include spinal mobilisation and manipulation, exercise prescription, acupuncture and dry needling, as well as myofascial triggerpoint injections and pharmacotherapy. The peripheral joints, such as the knee, hip and shoulder are also managed along similar lines emphasising education and self management of all musculosketal conditions

Sports and exercise medicine
Exercise is an important tool in the prevention of disease and in keeping us all healthy. Evidence supports exercise in the treatment of such things as Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart disease, anxiety and depression, stress. The current guidelines are for 150 minutes of exercise a week for good health. With this comes the risk of a Sports or Exercise injury. These injuries occur more commonly in ordinary athletes rather than elite sports persons.
I have been involved in the care of athletes, both recreational and elite sports persons for over 15 years and enjoy this aspect of my work the most. I have a good network of Surgeons, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Massage therapists who I work closely with to get people back being active, or back to the competitive sport they enjoy. I run specific Sports injury clinics and am available to visit your club, upon request, to help your trainers manage injuries.
I currently work with the following organisations and Sporting clubs:
Glenelg AFLW and Glenelg SANFL teams
Mclaren FC
Sportsmed SA
Reynella Sports Injury physiotherapy clinic
PhysioXtra
